The idea of student debt hasn't really been something that I really looked into until I looked at my future. As a a future medical school student, I plan on accumulating a lot of debt over the next 4 years. The two schools that I am considering applying to both average tuition between 40-50K a year. So over the course of 4 years, along with housing that comes along with that, I am looking at a debt of around 250K.
It's kind of a surreal thought right now even thinking about racking up that kind of debt. I definitely plan on taking out loans for the future. I don't really think I have much other choice besides that. It's not even like I can work during medical school. Time is of the essence, and pretty much every hour is devoted to going to class or studying (or eating). So its not like the four years spent at the school will help to pay for it. It's something that I will have to deal with afterward. (not a fun thought) I have heard that some people work part time and go to med school at the same time, but most of the advice that I have received is to stay away from that.
So back to the thought of debt. It's something that we, as student, cant really avoid. We pretty much have to deal with what institutions present to us and deal with it afterward. I've looked at the schools that I plan on attending, and tuition at those schools have increased every year for maybe the past 4 years, and that trend does not look like it's going to stop anytime soon. I do have a plan though. Hopefully, after medical school, I can get into some kind of loan forgiveness program at a hospital, where I would work there for a certain amount of time and my loan would be forgiven.
