Nuclear Radiation
I know this isn't one of our topics but this is a big enough topic that i feel like it should be included. It is very hard to tell what is going on exactly with these nuclear reactors. The Japanese government is tryign to cover it up and play it down but the US government seems to be much more worried. Our leading radioactive specialist said that one reactor doesnt have any water in it and is melting down. Ive also read that a few radioactive experts said this could lead to an apocolyptic situation. At the same time everyone is saying that its only a level 5 threat and that the melt down in chernoble was much worse. I tried to think of the ripple effect of what could happen with these reactors. Four of the reactors are partially melted down and 2 of them that they thought were fine have began heating up. The reactors are starting to get to the point where workers wont be able to enter the area anymore. This means that all six reactors might eventually meltdown completly. Good news for the west coast is that, any radioactive fumes wont be any threat if they reach the United States. Im not completly sure if thats true. I could imagine the government saying that so people dont begin evacuating the coast lines. I wouldnt be surprised if in 10 years the cancer rates in california go up a lot. The radioactive plumes are not my biggest concern. If even one of these reactors melts down then the ruel rods and radioactive material will become so hot it will melt through the floor of the reactor. This can lead to raw radioative material entering the ocean. This radioactive material is not contained in barrels or concrete like more waste dumped into the ocean. Also this is a much higher level of radiation. The damage that can be done to the ocean is unimaginable. It only takes 75 rads to make a human sick which means it takes much lower amount to kill oxygen producing plankton or other essential organisms. One could probably write an entire book on the possible effects of this nuclear disaster. We still dont even know the full effects of the BP oil spill on the ocean and now theres reportedly another oil spill. I wonder how much more abuse this planet can take. Its really sad that humans take complete advantage of the planet and expect there to be no repercussions.
