BLOG POST #6- The Academy Awards: Hopes
I have low hopes for this year’s Academy Awards, although I am really hoping I let myself down and prove myself wrong as we are graced with an incredible Academy Awards show like never before! Last year’s award show had an incredible buzz surrounding it and incredibly high potential in what turned out to my absolute least favorite award show night in history.
The Academy Awards tried to switch things up a bit and nominate ten films for the Best Picture award instead of the usual five. They also changed the layout and setup of the award show and even reverted back to announcing, “The winner is…” instead of the more recently accepted, “And the Oscar goes to…” They academy also decided to present numerous awards that at home viewers don’t really care about, giving less time to the awards that they do care about. Presenters seemed rushed and uncaring, with Twilight’s Kristen Stewart taking a break to clear her throat at the microphone.
Worse yet, it seemed that legendary actor Jack Nicholson was not in attendance for the first time, as he is normally always cut to wearing his shades in the audience but last year was not scene even once. Instead of a traditional musical performance, viewers were treated to a boring interpretive dance. By the time the award show came to its peak for the most coveted award of Best Picture, the ceremony was running so short on time that Academy chairman Tom Hanks had to power walk out to onto the stage, not mentioning any of the nominees up for the award and simply blurting out the winner. There was barely time for an acceptance speech as the credits rolled. Last year’s award show was pathetic so I am really hoping for something better this year.
