BLOG POST #12- Darker Superhero Movies
I am really loving the darker tones for new superhero films. All of the new superhero flicks try to make super powered heroes as realistic as possible. Directors want fans to really relate to the hero and believe that they could exist in our world and not just on-screen.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, superhero films became really popular with the likes of Howard the Duck, Captain America, Superman and of course the Batman films. But these films all took a lot of heat for being too silly. Superman had a fluorescent suite and he could throw his ‘S’ symbol which would bind villains like plastic wrap before magically disappearing—a power he reserved for on screen and was never found in the original comic books. And then of course was George Clooney’s Batman with his infamous bat-nipples. And nothing beats Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rendition of Mr. Freeze. “I’m going to turn this city into a cool-ah!” Oh, memories.
Then our new millennium brought us a new, more realistic superhero films. These films are a lot darker in that they try to be more realistic—no more fluorescent costumes or corny dialogue. This can be seen in the last three Spiderman films but even more so in the brand new Spiderman, which is going to be even darker than before. A few perfect examples are Christopher Nolan’s Batman films. These films not only allow a more realistic view of superheroes, but also gives a modern twist to the characters we love and it is really fun and interesting to watch the modernized realistic superheroes develop on-screen.
