health care / emergency room

I plan on going into the medical field within the next five years, so this issue is pretty close to me. I'm probably I'm not as educated as I should be about the health care system and all of its problems but I try to at least keep up with the main points. A few medical school interviewees have asked me my opinions about the health care system, so that has kind of kept me on my toes.

With regards to the emergency room, I can't say that I blame doctors for rejecting people coverage. (although I think that no one should be denied coverage especially in an emergency room) I personally think that it's the insurance company's fault for allowing that to happen. Insurance companies dont have patient's interest at heart, obviously because they are in an economic relationship with the patient. A sick or even dying patient is not economically beneficial to them, so it's their philosophy that they shouldn't have to pay for procedures at that point.

I really think that insurance companies are to blame. I like the fact that Obama's health care plan put's a lot more responsibility on insurance companies such as not being able to drop patients when they are sick. It's a step in the right direction. I really admire St. Jude's hospital for their policy of not rejecting patients in the emergency room. I'm not sure how they are able to work that out but it shows that it's capable of being done. So I think that more hospitals should move towards that direction. I hope that when I become a doctor that this gets worked out and patients dont have to be turned away.
