As a student that lives on campus, our options of food are really worrisome. The university wants to believe that they offer us healthy choices v. the fatty fried food that is more in abundance in the cafeterias around campus. And although I do have the option of picking a salad rather that a pizza or a burger, a salad is going to be more expensive and they ingredients themselves are not organic and have a high content of preservatives. I’ve never been a diet freak; I will eat almost anything that is placed in front of me, but the fact is that at home my mom would cook everyday and during my first two years of college I cooked most of my food from scratch. I am not a big fan of frozen food or extremely processed foods because I understand the damage that a high number of preservatives can do to the body. There have been studies that link high amounts of food preservatives with Alzheimer and I don’t know about the other students, but that creates a big concern for me. The idea of graduating from college with all the knowledge that we acquire from our classes and later in life that knowledge slowly abandoning us because of our nutritional habits, is kind of ironic but also alarming.
