BLOG POST #14- Marry Your Mother, Kill Your Father
Is the Oedipus Complex really true? Would I kill my father to marry my mother? Of course I am not talking about actually physically murdering my dad in order to commit incest and mate with my mother. But do these feelings exist within us? Do we men harbor feelings against our fathers and secretly desire our mothers?
It is interesting to think about. We each most definitely dislike certain characteristics of our fathers that we tell ourselves we will not grow up with. We tell ourselves that we won’t do those things and never act the way he does in certain situations. This is in fact, killing our fathers. We are killing parts of our fathers that make him who he is. Similarly, we want to marry our mothers. When we date and look for a girl to spend our lives with, we are looking for women who will nurture and love us just as our mothers did. We may not even realize it but we are looking for our mother within our girlfriends and lovers.
It is a very interesting concept and it is something we should self-evaluate. We should think about if we are really finding ourselves wanting to kill our fathers and marry our mothers. When we grow and love, we should take a step back and notice if we are trying to change who we are, just so we don’t become like he was. Obviously it isn’t as plain and clear as this, but there are most definitely some aspects of this complex that come into play with all of our daily lives.
