Always Room For Improvement
I haven't worked on improving my art in a relatively long time. Most of my drawings are stylized, drawing inspiration from both Western and Japanese Animation. However, I know that in order to actually improve I must stray away from stylized drawing and practice more on drawing from observation. Even Disney artists brought real lions into the studio for reference while making sketches for their hit animated film, The Lion King.
Real references are important when working on human anatomy and features. Currently, I'm most comfortable with drawing human hands, since I have my own for reference. Drawing other people is difficult because they are constantly moving, so I usually can only make a base sketch, or images of people from behind. I learned that drawing from a photograph doesn't produce the same results either. While photographs are great to use when one doesn't have any other materials for reference, they are no substitute for a real life model.
