BLOG POST #16- 7-Eleven

When Professor Baldwin asked us in class where we’d hang out as a teenager or when we’re back home, a lot of the Long Islanders replied that their only hangouts were in each other’s homes. Responses were that hangouts occurred as friends gathered in the basement of homes. They never went out. They couldn’t drive and the nearest pizza shop, I guess was too far away.

Professor Baldwin was surprised that nobody went anywhere and posed the question if any of us ever hung out at 7-Eleven. At first, I think like many of us in the class, I took the question as a joke. I thought to myself, who actually hangs out at 7-Eleven? People stop in to pick up Slurpees and some nosh and then leave, right? Well as I sat there laughing to myself about the odd choice of hangout that Professor Baldwin selected, I realized I’ve actually had plenty of awesome memory-worthy hangouts at 7-Eleven!

I’ve had great memories at 7-Eleven. During many late night and early morning bike rides during the summer with a friend, we’d decide to stop for a drink and a snack. Since it was usually between midnight and 3am, we had limited options. We’d end up at 7-Eleven where we befriended the clerk and often ran into other friends who were up to their own late night shenanigans. Aside from the bike ride visits, when my friends get bored, we’ll drive to 7-11 to just hang out, pig out, and sit outside. We always wait for people we know to show up and we can make a whole night of it.
