What is the Superbowl really?

The Superbowl is a bit of an enigma to people around the world. To Americans, it's an quintessential American tradition involving lots of junk food and beer. To the rest of the world I've discovered though, the Superbowl and other American festivities alike are a completely foreign concept with no real purpose. The Superbowl though, has become a time for everyone to get together. Regardless of the team you're rooting for, everyone can get together, share an experience and enjoy a ball game. The Superbowl is unencumbered by family obligations in the ways that holidays such as say, Thanksgiving and Christmas are, instead involving whoever is closest to you. The true beauty is that regardless of whoever these people are, they can all congregate in the same place; relax and enjoy themselves. And isn't that what the melting pot we call the United States of America is supposed to be about anyway? There's just nothing more American than that.
