Legacy

While doing the powerpoint, I realized that a lot of these things about my grandparents I never knew. I just automatically assumed they were from Beijing since they lived there but I never bothered to actually ask. I might have never known and it would've been lost after me. I think knowing about one's past is important because it is in a sense part of who you are.
For example my roommate says he is American, when he is of Bengali descent. He is very patriotic even having an American flag hanging on his side of the room. But he does not like Bangladesh and says he will never go back there. As a result he adopted American culture and sort of abandoned his own. I am not one to preach to others how to live their lives, but I cannot ever imagine myself in his position. I will never forget my nationality, culture and heritage. I cannot bear the thought of my children not being able to speak Chinese and not knowing about Chinese culture.
I think my family heritage is a part of who I am and I don't think I will let it go. I will tell my children and grandchildren so the legacy of my family hopefully will never be lost.
