Living in Sheepshead Bay, there has been construction on the Q and B lines on both sides of the tracks for the past few years. Construction is being done at Neck Road, Ave. U, all the way up to Newkirk Ave. It causes great inconvenience when you can’t get to one side of the station and have to transfer back uptown to get there. But the new makeover is needed and it is an improvement from before.
While it looks all pretty and new, it has already been vandalized even before some of the stations were officially open. I see graffiti sprayed on some the wooden boards covering the platform walls and those that are exposed. Whenever I get on the train and pass these stations, it’s a real eye sore and annoys me as to why someone would want to do it. (Look where the cleanup job is coming from – us.) They look like random writings and doodles you would find in a student’s notebook. One time there was someone who spray painted the walls across the station that said something along the lines of “look for Christine… on Facebook” and wrote something insulting about this person. It’s unappealing, immature, and stupid.
It doesn’t just stop at the subway stations either. Other places that are affected by their mischief are on other people’s property such as fences, the building walls, tables and chairs, and so on. If these teens got so much time on their hands that even their Xbox or computer can’t keep them entertained, they’ll be roaming around the streets to find something interesting to do. I wish there could be multiple public graffiti walls or a huge wall that has rotating paper canvas in each borough where they can do what they please all they want. I think they will be tempted to place their markings on anything that appears to be untouchable and clean. Of course this is only an idea and I can only dream that these teens would find something better to do than hang out at McDonalds and head off to who knows where.
