Distractions

There are just too many technological devices and features around that it’s starting to give me a headache and I don’t like how it is taking its toll on the younger generation. Kids these days are totally immersed in their Nintendo DS, iphone/apple products, and especially the various online social networks. I see less “in person” communications and faces glued to a computer or cellphone screen. Everywhere the social network phenomenon is doing its work and sometimes I don’t understand why people want to put every-little-detail about their life in their profiles like ‘at 7-11, can’t decide whether I want to buy bbq chips or ranch flavored…’ and a second late write ‘just got both!’ What a waste of space and that less than one minute of time you have just wasted reading it.

Social networks such as Facebook are like a drug. Once you try it, you only want more because it is that addictive. It can be seen everywhere; in the sinc site, on their laptop, phones, and on various apple products. Isn’t it annoying when you’re at the peak of rush hour in the sinc sites and there are no computers to print out your material for the next class because 1/3 of them are being used for Facebook? It’s as if they are lurking around and waiting for the first new update from any of their friends and be the first to know and comment. Or the many games that have on their such as Farmville, Cityville, and a lot of other ‘villes’, which your own creation starts falling apart after you leave it alone for a few hours so you have to be on top of it immediately to get money and new items. Overall, it’s just not healthy.

This doesn’t mean I hate Facebook and other social networks as there are positive results such as reconnecting with friends from long ago and keeping in touch with those that live in another country. But we just reveal ourselves way too much and the time spent on it can translate into doing more fun, outdoor activity, away from all electronic devices. Sometimes we need other kinds of distraction besides using the online realm as part of our escape from reality. I wonder how the world would react if Facebook decides to shut down for a week… I can totally see utter chaos in both the online world and in reality. And I would laugh at how serious people take this shut down and worry about their virtual crops being ruined. Get yourself off that chair and walk.
