Compare where you are to where you want to be and you'll get nowhere

I am now a junior in the spring semester of college with only another semester or two left. I have arrived this far in my college career and planning on finishing as soon as possible. Once I graduate, I will be departing to a new chapter in my life. I will be leaving a world filled with tests and research papers and entering one that involves new responsibilities with work and the “real life.” I am eager to leave college and explore what I truly want to do with my life, yet scared to leave the college world, something that has been familiar to me for the past three years.

Has college prepared me for the real world? Will I arrive and know what to do? One thing that I know will prepare me for the real world once I graduate is internships. Before I depart the college world, I need an internship to gain knowledge and experience in the field of work I would like to enter. This will give me a better understanding of what I want to do with my life and will help ease the transition.

The title of this blog post is a lyric from Sara Bareilles’ “Uncharted.” For the most part, we are always looking forward to something new or different in the future. We are always looking ahead, looking to jump into something new fairly quickly. I know I cannot wait to work in the advertising and marketing fields of television or the music business, but for now I must enjoy my time now where I have arrived in college. I need to stop and enjoy this moment of time that I am in now because I will never be able to get it back. Once I graduate next year, I can finally depart and focus on that moment in time - focus on where the challenges post-college life will take me.
