As you all know, cell phone use while driving (besides hand-free) is not permitted in the state of New York. If you were pulled over by a cop for talking on a cell phone while driving, you probably ended up paying a hefty price for the ticket. The law was updated recently across New York state to introduce points in addition to the ticket price and/or surcharges. For each cell phone violation, you are now charged with two points plus ticket cost. If you accumulate more than 11 points in an 18 month period, your drivers license gets suspended and you are unable to drive.
Cell phone use, especially texting while driving causes numerous accidents every year. In fact, the worst U.S. train crash in the last 15 years took place in Chatsworth, California in 2008, due to the train driver texting messages on his cell phone. The crash killed 25 people and injured 135. This goes to show how irresponsible people can be with technology. I see people everyday talking on cell phones while driving cars. However, I do believe that some people are actually really alert drivers and are able to multitask much more efficiently than others.
I think this law will be enforced heavily and eventually people will cut down on cell phone use while driving because if they dont, they could lose their driving rights. In my opinion, all behaviors that could significantly distract you from driving (ex: eating food, applying makeup, reading a book) should be subject to penalty.
