Binaries

Last week in class, we talked a lot about binaries. We came across various binary examples. These ranged from old vs young, with the teenager in between. This was probably the most profound example of a binary that we can all relate to, because we can all pretty much relate to it.

But when we went over this in class, the first thing that came to my mind was a binary that I could relate to in high school. This was between the athletes and the artsy type; the former encompassing students who participated in all kinds of sports while the latter comprising students who participated in theater program and music programs as well. As a basketball, football, and volleyball player, I found myself being associated more with the athletes. But at the same time, I had a lot of friends who were in the band in school. Thus, I was often in a dilemma in taking sides. I found it best to stay neutral in a situation like this.

It's clear that binaries like this exist in most high schools. I'm sure that a lot of people can relate to a situation like this. I have found that these binaries continue to exist throughout college. In fact, it may exist more in college because people start to find specialties. But in college, I noticed that a lot more of these categories begin to open. Athletes in high school either become serious athletes in college or diverge to another path, and likewise for musically inclined students.
