Sensory Awareness means focusing attention on what you're sensing in the body at a given moment. The breath is influenced by the state of the Body as well as by the state of the Mind. A steady Breath indicates a steady Mind and a relaxed Body. "Some somatic theorists believe that the breath itself has the ability to influence and affect the Mind-Body connection." The study of the breath is one of the most important aspects of yoga. Mastering the asanas ( postures ) of yoga is something I am still in the midst of accomplishing. I thought for a while that that was all that was to it. I now know that the asanas are actually the easiest part. Learning how to breath properly, relax your body on command, and release your thoughts are the most difficult parts of the practice of Yoga. I still have a lot to learn. The thing I like most about Yoga and one of the reasons I want to become an Instructor is that it is not about competition. If someone on the mat next to you seems more competent than you it should not get in the way of your practice. The goal is for each individual to get out of the class what they need. Whether it be increased flexibility, toning physique, or just an opportunity to relax their mind, this all can be accomplished in the yoga setting.
Today I took and passed my first Yoga Exam. I have three more to take and then I am certified to teach Yoga at a gym. Over the summer or next winter I plan on going to an Institute in Manhattan to become qualified to teach at a studio or maybe even go off on my own ( kinda like my own business :) ). We will see. So far, pursuing Yoga is the only thing I have felt passionate about.
