Beauty in Simplicity

So much snow has fallen during our winter break. And I hated it. More snow means more shoveling. My dad the workaholic never asks me to help him, but mustering all of the filial piety that was passed on to me I always volunteered. It was the only thing that got me away from the computer screen in weeks. After a few hours of shoveling I dragged myself back into my house and went into the bathroom to wash my face. I stared in the mirror, water dripping down my face. I ran my fingers through my messy, unshaven face as I thought to myself, " Man what a mess". That's when I heard my mom calling me to go take photographs with her at the park. I said yes.

I never say yes. She asked me many times on previous occasions, but I always thought grinding levels on the new MMO was more important. I didn't know what made me agree, but I did. When we got to the park, it was freezing cold. The wind blew on my face and ears almost making me regret my decision. I walked towards the pond kicking snow like I was twelve. I just walked around keeping myself busy by making patterns with my footprints in the snow while my mom snapped pictures. She then said to me, "Here you try" she said as she handed me the camera. I looked around for something to take a picture of. The pond, of course. I squeezed my arms, but the camera still shook. I finally pressed the button as the camera made a sound and took the picture.
When I went to look at the picture I just took, something amazed me. It was beautiful.

Whenever I went to that park, I never really noticed the pond. Well I did, but not in the way that I have now. It was simple, yet beautiful. Most people try to find beauty in things: in art, in people, in buildings. Most people in their pursuit of beauty, fails to see the beauty of simple or common things. We notice attractive members of the opposite sex or majestic buildings because those are not things we see everyday. But we ignore the things that we do see everyday and we can't appreciate their beauty. After that day, I began to pay attention to the small and simple things. Looking up at the night sky while a flurry of snow is falling on your face, or the shape that the water makes when the wheels of a car goes through a large puddle. This is just a small portion of all the beauty we are missing, just because we are too busy looking for it in something we think ought to be beautiful. Just because something is common or everday doesn't mean it can't be beautiful and we often forget that.
