One of my all time favorite destinations is old San Juan, PR. In between grad school apps and cramming for the GRE, i managed to sneak away for a week over the break. The best part...wait for it...its cheappp!! The Island is full of awesome sites, culture, food, tradition, and people. Flights can range anywhere on average from $150-$300, and hotels are available for as low as $80 a night. Food and drinks are very inexpensive, prices incomprehensible to jaded New Yorkers like myself.
Each time i visit i always stop by local eateries for specialties like Mofongo (plantain based dish), Piraguas( Ices to dye for), Bacalaito (epic fried cod fish), and Chuleta Can Can ( better than bacon). If your a vegan...well just stay home, their all about the meat. January 14-16 is Fiesta De San Sebastian, a street festival that puts Mardi Gras in a diaper. With 75cent beers, it makes sense that $3 will get you a drink the size of your head. This is not just a rowdy festival, all the local artisans come out and display their art. Great cultural experience overall.
Puerto Rico in a nutshell... Food,Rum,family/friends,beach.
