Abandonment

While I was brainstorming ideas for my abandonment video, I had the Grammys red carpet special on TV in the background. Most of the artists walking the red carpet and attending the actual show are the “in” people right now. They are the most demanded, most talked about, most played on the radio, etc. Lady Gaga just arrived in an egg because she hasn’t been born yet…but that’s a different story. However, Lady Gaga is a highly anticipated pop artist. Everybody wants to know what she is wearing, what her album is going to sound like, and what crazy thing she will do next. Will she still be in the music business 10 years from now or will she be abandoned by her fans or most of the pop world? Artists today rarely stick around. They create a song with a catchy melody and lyrics (and most likely add auto-tune) and it instantly becomes a hit on the radio. Look at the charts from 5 years ago. Many of those artists’ music are rarely played on radio. Fans have left those artists behind and have moved onto the artists that are singing the auto-tuned, dance music that is popular today.

It’s not just music artists we abandon and leave behind. The same goes for technology. Smart phones have taken over, as well as new Apple products which seem to be released every year right after you bought that one product which you thought was the coolest idea.

It’s as if society’s attention span has gotten shorter and we just want the greatest inventions ever immediately. We abandon things that work for a period of time and move on to the next best thing.
