BLOG POST #29- Ready to Move Out
I’m twenty. I’m a junior in college. I have a part –time job working at a law firm on Wall Street. I don’t have any direct path for life. I’m still figuring things out. So how do I know when it’s time to move out? There are obvious pros of living at home. I’m not paying for laundry or food. And most importantly, I’m not paying rent or a mortgage or anything. It’s my parent’s house and they take care of all of that. But am I losing out by living at home?
I’ve been told that once you move out, that’s when your life really starts. You need to care for yourself so you begin to really use your money wisely and you begin to understand what working is all about. You can’t rely on mommy and daddy for anything anymore. You pay your taxes, your rent, your laundry, and your food. It’s all on you. You can’t slack because if you do, you lose. But am I really relying so much on my parents right now? It’s not like I haven’t gotten out into the real world. I dorm at school all week long. I understand responsibility. I know what it is like to fend for myself. I don’t call mommy and daddy for help. I found myself a job. I do my schoolwork. I balance my schoolwork, my job, my relationships, and my money.
It’s hard to tell when a good time to move out would be and what the benefits would really be. The pros and cons of moving out aren’t so clear and it is scary to make such a big decision if I’m not sure that it’s the right one. Hopefully as time moves on and life changes, it all changes for the better and my decision will become clearer. Because until then, that decision is as tough as everything else in life.
