blog 13 dan gulino

I am most curious as to what Middle Eastern culture is. What music is popular? Do they watch movies produced in the West? I am especially excited to learn how much the governments of the Middle East affect what is allowed to be watched, and heard in the media, and to what affect they are influencing the entertainment industry. All of these questions will allow me to better understand the people of the Middle East, and why they are portrayed so wickedly in our culture.

On my list of values I am happy to say that our pop culture does not make the top ten. Like millions of Americans I too use Facebook, watch TV dramas, and listen to the latest music. I could not however, sing you a Taylor Swift lyric, name you a character on Grey’s Anatomy, or tell you what is going on in the Twilight series. I am pretty simple, usually following what interests me, and never go out of my way to hop on fads or trends. I enjoy music that compliments my emotions whether it is rock, rap, alternative or even techno.

dan gulino #12 Zombies

Am I the only person who thinks this zombie madness going on among us is obnoxious? Earlier today I saw a kid climbing a tree by the SAC, holding his hand above his eyes, as if he was trying to see zombies approaching him from afar. As much as I would love to carry a nerf gun with me to class, I have can’t understand how campus allows this game to continue. After the Virginia Tech shootings, which was not very long ago, I feel that campus would urge students to not carry weapon replicas to class, and all over campus grounds.
Sure, one can argue that they are only nerf guns, and no real harm can be done by them. Yes, physically I do agree that a nerf gun is harmless. However, the psychological impact that carrying a “weapon” around campus is very high in my opinion. It puts students into somewhat of a gang mentality, which I feel Stony Brook would usually try get its students to avoid if possible. Also, watching students play this game all over campus makes me somewhat embarrassed to be a student here at Stony Brook. Can’t everyone just grow up, get a girlfriend and put the nerf guns down? Middle School is over people, these are your college days.

Oscars

I don't know if that .gif photo is going to work but Anne Hathaway is dancing around in her dress to make the fringes move during the Oscars. I love her cute personality:) So the Oscars last night was amazing. I loved the part when James Franco came out in a dress;) That was hilarious. Overall I thought James Franco and Anne Hathaway were such a great pair for hosting the show.

What I didn't like was that a lot of people were just dragging on with their Oscar speeches. Yeah I know it's nerve racking but they didn't seem prepared at all. The performances were really good especially the Tangled theme song. Natalie Portman won best actress award. I still haven't seen Black Swan yet so I guess I'll get to that asap.

I can't believe P.S. 22 from Staten Island were performing as a choir at the end, those kids were so harmonized. At 10 years old, they got a pretty impressive resume: I SANG AT THE 2011 OSCARS. Damn yo.

Radiohead's King Of Limbs Part Deux ????

The highly anticipated release of King of Limbs excited radiohead fans everywhere with its early release online. Now there is talk that the group will release disc two soon. Glory!! I have to admit, the new album was uniquely different then their last album. I cant quite seem to categorize it either. To put this album in a category just would not give it justice. It's one of those albums you can sit back, relax and just listen. you don't have to think and analyze, the music speaks to you in it's own way. Would love to see what a potential second disc would bring.
