Women as artist's

Women throughout history have had their fair share of discrimination no matter what ethnicity or background you come from. No doubt that building respect for women as anything other than a mother or housekeeper was a long and exhaustive battle. Many women of which assumed the identity of a man to get their recognition. But to ask why havn’t there been any great women artists I think isn’t completely the fault of any man. Let me explain myself. We might exalt artists like Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, etc. for what they have been able to accomplish as what many consider to be great works of art but by that same token it is just the opinion of a certain group that hold these people in high esteem up on a pedestal. In certain cases, such as Van Gogh only selling one painting in his lifetime, some of these artists weren’t even appreciated in the time that they lived. The main issue here of equality is that woman want to be treated as equals, but not in a patronizing manner, by people who will probably never see it that way. It’s kind of like trying to force your way into a members only club that will only stare at you with contempt the moment you do get in. The many different history books written by various men can’t even agree on the correct details. You have so many lists to rank greatness and those are never the same either. At the end of the day, it’s just someone’s opinion. Feminists groups are very strong these days and with their support from other women, I’m sure they can raise awareness of great women painters such as Georgia O’keeffe or Adélaïde Labille-Guiard.
