State of the Art Dining Facility @ Stony Brook

Stony Brook is getting ridiculous and I cannot wait until I graduate from this school. The other day I received an email stating “The decision is that you all want and need a new state of the art dining facility by 2014. Plans are already underway to shut down H dining, and the Union commons to redirect dining services to the new building. This sounds like exciting news, but I believe I can change your mind with some facts. The price is $34,000,000.00. That means that 34 million dollars is going to come out of each and every one of your pockets over the next 5 years. The mechanism with which FSA plans to collect your money is by raising the price of meal point’s %5. The weight hanging over commuter students heads is even larger. Those attempting to by food without a meal plan are going to be hammered by even higher rates of increase. There are fewer than 30,000 students at Stony Brook right now. By divvying up this price amongst us all, we will all be over 1000 dollars poorer. We will also not be the students reaping the benefits of this dining hall.” I personally don’t think we need a new state of the art dining facility. It would be nice but it is not a necessity. As it is now Stony Brook is already doing construction. They are rebuilding the old chemistry building and adding more space to the sports complex. This is where our tuition money is going and the reason for increasing food prices. Did we really need a new sports complex? What this school should be spending money on it getting more classes because of budgets cuts it is very difficult to register for the classes you need to graduate because they are not offered in the spring or fall or they are not scheduled at all. I personally think it’s a waste of money at least for right now because with all these budget cuts the money they want to use to build a new state of the art dining hall they can use it to more available classes.
