Hans Haacke’s rational approach to creating art is kind of refreshing to me. I am taking a class about postmodernism art and in there we learn about different philosophies from people like Derrida, Foucault, and Marin and they discuss many different people’s work like Barnett Newman, Van Gogh, and Cy Twombly but the reasoning most of the time goes over my head because of the ambiguity in postmodernism philosophy. We can sit in a three-hour class and read these texts and I feel like its all one contradiction after another. But when Haacke speaks of his purpose, such as when he says he appropriates a corporation style for a corporate client that makes sense to me. He would include words but leave out its thousands of possibilities by letting you know his intent. And just like he said, ambiguity is nice at times but in this art world, there is sometimes way too much. Haacke uses language to communicate explicitly and that’s the most refreshing part, to communicate a clear idea.
