So for this blog, i'm going to talk about being an academic adviser. i actually always meant to blog about it, but i haven't gotten around to it. Also, i've been saving it because i really like being an academic adviser. i became an academic adviser last year. at first, i was very skeptical about it. I had not really heard about it before. this whole concept was new to me. it was also very intimidating: did i really want to be advising other students with potentially life changing decisions.
Those were the risks that i had to deal with when i applied for the position as an APA (academic peer adviser). It turns out that it was well worth it. Part of my job responsibilities includes working at the front desk of the advising center, advising students on regisration, and teaching a class for first year transfer students. Students really look up to me in my ADV 101 class, and it feels great to be able to make their transition to stony brook an easier one.
All in all, it is an experience that i'm glad i became a part of. It is a huge time commitment; being a full time student as well, but it is well worth it. I've met some awesome people in the advising center as well as students who came in to the advising center. We also built a boat for the Roth pond regatta (which came in 3rd place out of 48 boats). So not only has it been constructive, but it's been a whole lot of fun as well.
