What It Means to be Human

My HDV 101 assignment from my freshman year.

I do not believe that there is one single defining trait that makes a human, a human. To me, there are many things that go along with being a human. It means making mistakes and growing and learning from those same mistakes to hopefully make yourself a better person as to not make the same mistake in the future. Being a human means struggling to achieve your goals so that one day you may eventually better yourself or those around you, and that in the end, it would be all worth it. As a human you make new friends, and lose old ones, and always have some sort of urge to socialize with others, and because of that, there is a lot of drama that comes along with being a human as well as a lot of conflicts between friends and family. As humans, I believe that we never want to see another human suffer, and that there is something within us that tells us how it just isn’t right when we see something like this.

It is through these things and various other little traits that define what humans are. They all are not necessary traits within humans, and if a human is lacking one of those traits, it certainly does not mean that they are not a human. However, being a human being does not just mean having a superior mental capacity over other animals, but rather something much deeper than that, that lies within all of us.

Cats and Curses

As I am running out of ideas for blog entries, I think I’ll tell you the story of how I got my pet cat. This story starts with how I lost my old cat to something of a curse. More like shit luck than a curse I guess. It seems that every time my family goes on vacation, which is not often, one of our pets dies while we are away. I’m not sure if it’s due to poor timing, or irresponsible pet sitters, but during our second most recent vacation (which was actually like four years ago) both our cat and our dog died within a week of each other. The dog had to be put down by our grandparents who were house sitting, and the cat died few days after our return. Our next cat found us by chance. He started out as a stray that would visit us from time to time and eventually was welcomed into our house, remaining primarily an outdoor cat. Well a few days before we were scheduled to leave for our latest vacation, this past summer, this cat became ill. My sister stayed behind to look after him, take him to the vet, and aid his recovery. But there was no saving him. On the night we were driving back home my sister called me to say that she had found a new kitten and didn’t know how to tell our father. Well we got home at around midnight and I came in the door all ready to be angry with my sister for getting a new cat so soon without asking us. But when I got in, what I found was a tiny little kitten far to small and cute to be angry around. Next time we go on vacatoin, we’ll take the cat with us.

Dan Gulino #5 Stony Brook Spending

Each and every day of the semester I reside at Roosevelt Quad, in Stimson building. If you ask anyone that lives on Stony Brook campus, they can all agree that Roosevelt Quad is the worst quad on campus to live in(by far). If you were to further inquire with a resident of Roosevelt Quad, you would find out that Stimson is the most run down, depreciated building in the quad. However, only 100 yards away from Stimson are the two newest residency buildings (Yang, Lauterbur).
Recently, I could not help but notice that each floor of the new buildings was given a brand new ping pong table. Each of these ping pong tables cost at least several hundred dollars. This frustrates me enormously because I am currently using broken bathrooms, run down facilities, that are in desperate need of repair. I pay the same amount of room and board as the residents of Yang/Lauterbur, so why don't you spend SUNY's money a little wiser Stony Brook?

Ah Highschool....

Nostalgia just hit me or rather hateful memories. Now don't get me wrong I enjoyed high school very much and miss it too. However there was something or rather someone I can't forget. This was a history teacher who I will mention as Ms. A. Now junior year is an important year that most colleges if not all colleges look. During my freshmen and sophomore years I manage to pull off some okay grades. However has god forsaken me to be stuck with this teacher for my most important year.
It would seem I'm being over dramatic but this is the type of teacher who has colleagues that know very well how she treats her students. She argues with parents during parent teacher conferences and even parents who fail to believe their son or daughter sees for themselves how terrifying this teacher is. She gives out quizzes if we answered or are unable to answer her questions. If we can't answer her questions she would write the answer in large font herself in our notebooks filling up a whole page full of notes. She even made a student cry. Now each class is 45 minutes long it takes 5 minutes for her to give out her exams and we have to give in our exams 5 minutes before class is over thus giving us a total of 35 minutes to take an exam with 35 multiple choice and an essay.
I only managed to pass her class barely every marking period and she failed practically 55% of her students. There were some instances when someone tried to push her down the stairs. There was also a time when one of her old students popped into the classroom and cursed at her then ran off. She chased him down the hallway and had security guards track him however the guards couldn't even take her seriously. She became extra strict that day but it was worth it. High school were the days and there were some ups and downs but I hope one day I can go back and reenact that same moment.

a far off memory

Abandonment Film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKf1TEE3XUI

This film was shot at Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove, the town I grew up in. It's a bit of a personal piece to me, as the location holds many memories. Good memories at Welwyn include nights spent with booze and bonfires or running through the park and burnt down mansion with paintball guns and spraypaint. But at the same time, the place encampasses painful memories I've spent years trying to supress. Leaving high school a year early to escape from the people and memories I no longer wanted a part of, returning to this locations brought back a spur of emotions. It felt surreal, almost dream-like. So familiar, yet so foreign. Home no longer feels like home. It reassured me that I need to keep moving forward.

Oh wait I thought it was suppose to be nice out?

Yet again Mother Nature had tricked us. What seemed to be an awesome day with sunshine and no clouds, turned out to be nothing but a lie. Granted it was nice for a few hours, delight went to disappointment as the night came. My friends and I were excited to see the weather finally take a change for the better but it turns out we were too optimistic. We usually play football in the stadium parking lot at night when all the cars are gone. The first time we played this semester was just awful. It was raining and most of the snow was still there, not to mention the patches of black ice that everyone was slipping on.

The frigid weather forced us to end our game quickly leaving us wet and freezing from the rain. A few weeks had passed and since the weather seemed so nice we were all excited to play again, but this time with nice weather. Mother Nature had something else in mind though, she decided to bring the winds of pain and sadness striking us with blows from the north, east, west, and south. The winds were strong that night and don't let anyone tell you any different. We were, to say the least, upset and cold but we decided to push through the pain and play anyways.

The game went on and the winds blew from all directions creating a hectic game of trying to go with the wind and see if we could use it to our advantage. The cold chills that those winds brought to our bodies forced a few of our men to wither and turn in for the night, stating that they were going to succumb to the cold of the night if they were to stay there any longer. A few brave souls and I decided to stick it out and continue to play through the pain and misery. You might ask why and I would tell you just for those few minutes of joy when you catch that football and make an amazing play. We made the best of the worst conditions and we came out of that parking lot better men. Mother Nature may be strong but she cannot sway those hearts that are brave and honorable.
