School

I like to think of the concept of school. We go to school and we retain information for that hour or so and then go on within the day. Some people will grasp what they learned and apply it into life and actually be useful while others see the information just as a grade to obtain. I think knowledge is the best to obtain and it is pointless to go to school and be "zombies".

I always believe going to school and using your knowledge that you have gotten is beneficial to yourself & society. By being full of knowledge & learning new information we can expand our ways of thinking. Going into a classroom and taking notes and not being active is a waste of time and energy.

I think people are afraid of what others will think of you if you actually do work and may think of you as a loser. I think it's stupid and those people who judge you about being knowledgeable is worse.

Group Presentations

I will be working in a group later today, and there are always issues with group work. Lets break it down, first there is always the go getter. The one person who has to get a 100, or they will cry to sleep. So they take on all of the responsibility and end up cracking. Then you have the enforcer, the person who always agrees it's a great idea, and will go along with anything the leader says. But will not do any of the real bulk work. And then there's that one person. That person that does nothing, but expects the same grade as everyone else.

This becomes extremely frustrating and annoying when this person does not do there fair share of the work. Especially because I am usually the first person in that scenario. But that leaves you with the question: what do you do?

Do you run and tell the teach that the person did not do there fair share of work? and thus say that this person does not deserve the same grade? Or do you let it be, realize Karma is a bitch and it will come back to bite them.

I feel like I may have to make this decision very soon, and I am quite nervous. I don't want to be on anyone's bad side. But I also don't want to be taken for a ride.

The Aftermath of Love Cana

In 1977, tests were done to see if toxins were coming into contact with residence of Love Canal. When the results came, and it was shown that there were more than two hundred different chemicals seeping into the basements of residents as well as the school where the children of the area went. Of the chemicals that were found, and able to be identified thirty-four were known to cause cancer. More horrifying is that nearly one hundred of the chemicals found, had no information available what so ever.
In 1978, a study done by the State of New York showed that there was a greater increase in miscarriages among women living within what they considered ‘first tier’ of homes surrounding the canal. Upon that discovery a health emergency was immediately declared, the school was closed, and nearly 235 families are evacuated.


The next families to be evacuated were any families with pregnant women, or children under the age of two years old, and from the southern half of the Canal which was considered the more contaminated area. And by May 1980, evacuation was available to any family that wanted to leave.
All in all studies show that children of Love Canal were 2.5%more likely to have seizures, 1.5% more prevalent to have learning disabilities, there were also increases in the prevalence of hyperactivity, eye irritation, as well as skin rash and abdominal pain.
In 1989, there was a push by the EPA to re name Love Canal, to Sunrise City. Many believed this was a push to have the area re occupied. The Public was told, and thankfully the change wasn’t made.
We as human beings need to be more aware of our surroundings, and the horrible things happening to our planet.

Lois Gibbs

Lois Gibbs was just another mother in Love Canal, when she realized that her seven-year-old son’s school was built on toxic chemical waste. Further investigation showed that not only the school but her entire town was built on toxic waste. With no prior activism under her belt, Gibbs organized the Love Canal Homeowner Association, which battled local, state and federal government and eventually led to the evacuation of nearly 900 homes and the clean up of the Canal.


Back in the 1890’s entrepreneur and visionary William T. Love moved to Niagara Falls, New York with plans to build a revolutionary city that was powered by hydroelectric dams in a new canal. Years later the city of Niagara Falls, decided to bought the canal because they felt it would be an ideal chemical dumping site. And after the waste was covered a neighborhood was build on top of it. Local water pits were used for recreational use, such as swimming, skating and many community events.
It is estimated that nearly 22,000 tons of waste in the pit.

Ecology

I am taking an EcoFeminism class this semester that has opened my eyes to a new way of living.
But first, I need to let you know how I once was, for you to fully understand how much this class has changed me.

When I walked into this class, I originally thought that I was going to have an issue, and possibly have to drop the
class due to lack of interest. And then I read the discussion of Ecofeminism, which is defined as a social and political view
and movement in which points to the existence of considerable common ground between environmentalism and feminism, with some currents linking deep ecology and feminism. Being a Women's Studies Major I figured I should stick around, stick it out and take the upper level class. We started off by reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Which outlined the issues and side effects of using pesticides. It is amazing to me that the federal government funded (and still does) nation wide pesticide spraying, which has been linked to cancer, and many other illnesses.

I am now working on a project about Lois Gibbs, and Love Canal. This average house wife changed the world by standing up for her and her neighbors rights to live safely, and not on a toxic dump sight.

These amazing women, and many more have and continue to fight for the rights of not only nature, but humans to live.

We need to remember that we live on this planet, the planet doesn't need us.
