What I hate most about school is testing. With midterms coming up I know I am going to get all stressed out and try to cram everything I learned into two nights of studying.
The problem that I have with it is that most of it is not practical information I will ever use. Especially when it comes to DEC classes. Those should always be open book so that it is clear that I know how to access the information and learn from it. That is what education is after all, isn't it? Why do I need to recite back to the teacher all of the terms he/she feels is important.
If it is for my major, yes. Teach me and test me on the real world things I need to know but do I really need to know about how to tell the distance a wave traveled from sea. Interesting yes! Memorization worth -no!
My last 4 classes here at Stony Brook next year will bee all DEC classes. I am not going to be a happy camper!

Mars vs. Venus
Has anyone read the book, "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus"? I never actually finished it but I am thinking of reading it through sometime soon.
It is amazing me how differently men think (or sometimes-don't think). Most men really have trouble communicating, and when they do, it is amazing to learn what they think women mean when they say something. I would assume it works both ways but really now. I think men either think too much or not at all.
I had someone telling me over the weekend, "what I was thinking" and said he had me all figured out and knew exactly how I felt....Hello...hate to bust your bubble there buddy, but that was the furthest thing from my mind.
Yet, the conversation we had prior to his "revelation" of how he knew me so well now had a totally different meaning. I don't want to have to figure anything out. I'm not about the drama, so keep me out of it.

What's differnet today?
Talking in class today about how everything moved so fast and everyone needs to be "connected" all the times makes me feel that what society is missing is it's past.
I remember watching shows like "Leave It to Beaver", "Father Knows Best", "Little House on the Prairie" (I know, I'm really dating myself). But compare them to whats on TV these days. No one would ever have thought about blurting the F word while accepting an Oscar. Even Hollywood had glitz and glamor then.
So what I think is missing from the past and what could possibly be the worst injustice to our future is the lack of connection with the past.
I remember watching shows like "Leave It to Beaver", "Father Knows Best", "Little House on the Prairie" (I know, I'm really dating myself). But compare them to whats on TV these days. No one would ever have thought about blurting the F word while accepting an Oscar. Even Hollywood had glitz and glamor then.
So what I think is missing from the past and what could possibly be the worst injustice to our future is the lack of connection with the past.
Roommate
Having a roommate can have its ups and downs. Personally I don't like living in the same room with someone unless I truly know them and have a good connection with them. When you can't talk to your roommate it becomes awkward to tell them, "hey can you turn your light off" or even "can you talk to your girl friend outside the room". You start to feel rude.
By having a connection with that person you feel that you can say whatever you want to them and they know not to take offense to it because they know you. I believe having a comfort level around you is always important because then it can change who you are in situations you deal with.
In my situation with dorming, having a roommate can drive me insane without a comfort zone. When I room with a stranger or a person that I kind of know can really bother me. There mannerisms bother me and I tend to not be myself. When I want to get to know someone.. I rather do it on a few hour basis rather then living with them.

Studying
I always use to hate to studying. Why must I force myself to remember detail notes just to throw it back up onto a piece of paper that is forcing me to write. I find tests are pointless and should be more a sufficient way of "grading" a student. I think information should be given out to a student to better develop them, but not force them into retaining information.

Saying what you want
Right now as I type on this blogger, I can't help but get excitement that I can write about whatever I want and go off rants about whatever is on my mind. I feel that releasing stress or being able to let yourself be free and just type away creates freedom.
By me just typing whatever comes to my mind allows me to think deeper and deeper and even bring up topics to the surface to discuss. Being able to speak to others and yourself benefits everyone and I believe is the line that separates us from human and animals.
Thinking deep like that can spark interests to someone or even create an argument. Communicating in general is a gift that should be embraced and respected because without communication and your own sense of mind then the world will be boring.
Video Games
There is something about videos that I can't get over. I can come home from a stressful day and turn on my xbox and play a game and feel relaxed. Don't get me wrong I do live a active lifestyle and work out and keep my mind busy, but I like to get on my console and play to take my mind off things.
When you enter a game you are entering a new world with a new personality. It is fun to play in a different setting and be able to do whatever you want. there is no moral codes here, rights, wrongs, just simple tasks to do.
Playing a game is simple and fun because it gives you all the necessary tools to play. You can click a button to do a move that you wouldn't be able to do with years of training and it excites a person because you think you are that person. It is fun to be in control of someone or something else and to have freedom to do whatever.
