Smiling at Freshman

Freshman... the title alone screams new kid. Being a small fish in a huge pond is starting to get to me. I can't network like I did in high school because we are all moving in different directions while still following the same path as a freshmen class (if that makes any sense. The other day a guy, who shall remain nameless smiled at me while I was explaining to another classmate my greenhorn status at Stony and how me classes were kicking my butt. That smile could have been making fun of my status or just a warm welcome, either way it's good to see a smile from an upperclassmen that wasn't a “hey young thing what's sup” smile. We locked eyes just long enough for me to catch the presence of a smile. I don't know if I grinned back but afterwards I definitely felt better about being new. It made me feel as though I belonged in his world now and that's where I was welcomed.

It's sounds like a story of unrequited love but it's honestly not it's. It's...it's, I’m not sure what to call it but I like it. He could have been a stuck up snob and said “oh, you're frosh” and chuckled in that asshole manor. For a split second we were friends understanding each others situation. It's given me new hope about my potential of making friends here. I have a few really close freshman friends on campus but nothing beats networking with people who know the ropes better then you. People always say that I am a really approachable person and I kind of see that also. people always seem to ask me where the union is or if they're in the right class. I guess that's a good sign but when it comes to forming long lasting friendships with those people it only happens once in a blue moon.

The gist I guess I’m really trying to get at is if everyone smiled at at least one stranger a day or and hour the world would be a better place. I know that guy probably thought nothing of that smile he shot me at the end of class but, I really took it to heart. Little things really do go a long way. Thank you for smiling at me :)
