Can You Be Sustainable in a Suburban Setting?

What are the suburbs? The basic idea is an area between cities and farms, not to close to the city, but not too rural. When you think of the suburbs does the idea of a white picket fence come into your mind? What about rows and rows of houses that look identical, with similar cars and the families that live in them? Well can that setting be sustainable? Can they live the same way for generations without impacting later generations with their current resource use? Definitely not, why the main reason goes back to the start, of the car culture. With the help of cars people could commute to work from farther away, and usually the jobs are in the city. When cars became more affordable, more people moved away from the city to quiet suburban neighborhoods. So with the use of cars the basic necessities, such as the hospital, police and fire stations, schools, and shopping centers, did not need to be placed close to these areas of homes, because people could just drive to use these facilities. So suburbs were created around driving, but we now know that driving is very unsustainable not only because of pollution but gas production and prices as well. So unless we move the points of interest and necessities closer to the people, within walking distance, then this lifestyle will need to be altered.
